The year was 1964 - The Cleveland Browns were Superbowl champs, the Sharpie Marker was new, The Beatles were the biggest thing anywhere, and Goldfinger was in theaters.  The makers of Foundry cigars are offering up a taste of the past in their usual enigmatic way with their Past, Present, Future line.   And today, I am fortunate enough to be smoking their piece of the past.   I have admitted it before but I am a nut for anything vintage.   TV shows, music, movies, clothes, you name it.   So, needless to say, I am excited to see what the Past tastes like according to Foundry.

Construction:  Kind of lumpy and mildly veiny with a nice soft toothiness to the milk chocolate colored wrapper, the 1964 has a very nice rustic look.   The band is nicely understated - off-white with black decor.   I don't know if they are planning on putting a tchotchke ring on there like they have been with other releases....but I hope it's a mood ring. 

Pre-light Aroma and Draw:  Plenty or leather, a touch of manure, dry hay, sweet cocoa, and tobacco notes waft off of this cigar like crazy.   Great array of aromas.   A cold pull gives a nice sweet leather note.  The draw is nice and open too.

Light and Burn:  The burn on the 1964 gave me a little bit of trouble that caused me to fire up a few more matches than I would have liked but it wasn't a canoe or anything...just a tad slow in spots.

Tasting:  Some peppery leather starts things off.   As things get underway, I get black pepper, coffee, and roasted nuts.   A very light mineral note touches the palate ever so slightly.   Some caramel and cocoa make appearances as well.   I would classify this as a pretty strong medium so far.   Notes of cream, cedar, and very mellow tobacco round things out very nicely.   Delicious so far.

The second third starts with a creamy and salty set of flavors at the core with touches of leather, pine, and chocolate.   A very unique and undeniably tasty cigar.   The peppery note has faded and some coffee shows up in its place.   It never fails to amaze me how good Foundry cigars are.   Feels odd to have nothing to gripe about.

The final sad third of my tobacco time machine has arrived.   The leather and pepper are back and a faint note of orange peel.   Pepper takes a bigger role as things wind down but it isn't overpowering.   Always a plus.  Overall, I am sold.

Value: At about $8, this new Foundry offering won't break the bank

Final Thoughts:  If 1964 cigars tasted like this one, I could easily see myself hopping a time machine out of here for a while.   My penchant for vintage things not withstanding, this cigar stands on its own very nicely.   I could see this cigar being the core line of any boutique and selling very well.   Highly recommended.
