Let me take you back to the late 80's....me, sitting in the old goose neck rocking chair watching Friday the 13th part 2 with my Grandma....yes, my Grandma. She loved horror movies. She never jumped either and would always say, " once I start watching one, I just have to see how it turns out" . She is 91 now and can't see or hear very well but I still have the memories. Anyway, there I am, watching intently and she creeps up and pokes me in the ear with a resounding " boo!" , making me jump up and fly across the room. As I look back I laugh, but when my heart was beating a heavy tattoo in my chest, adrenaline flowing like Niagra falls, I was scared out of my wits. Good times?

The cigar for today pays homage to Jason Voorhees. Hockey mask wearing, ever creative murderer that is one of the most recognizable figures in horror. I have read a few other reviews on this cigar but I wanted to put my couple of pennies out there, so here we go....

Construction: Not being a member of the Little Monsters, the JV13 is a massive churchill sized behemoth. The wrapper is thick and oily with loads of veins. There is a neat rustic look to this cigar that I love. The band is the standard small Tatuaje affair with a deep red background and black letters. Bloody and cool.

Pre-light Aroma and Draw: Out of the cellophane, I get aromas of coffee, oak, and leather. The draw is flawless too.

Light and Burn: The burn starts out razor sharp but I had a few issues along the way that forced a handful of touchups. Nothing too hateful but a little annoying.

Tasting: Starting off, I get a nice leather character with that heady dense Tatuaje flavor that you find in the brown label series.

The first third gives off vanilla, earth, espresso, and oak sweetness. A very fine start.

The second third is a little rougher with flavors of black coffee, earth, and some cedar. A bit of age will probably smooth these out a bit. I know they were pushed out a little quicker than some might have liked, and it shows. However, the JV13 is still pretty darned good this early.

The final third provides the same flavor profile as the middle with a heavier espresso note. Thanks to the size of this cigar it lasted a full 90 minutes and I smoked it to the nub.

Value: At $13 and change - yes, 13 as in Friday the 13th - the JV13 is a special occasion cigar for most. Since they are a limited release but readily available, I will probably snag a couple more to stash and age for next Halloween with a re-smoke and review in mind.

Final Thoughts: From now on, I will think of Jason with a manly cigar aroma about him rather than the reek of death and blood. I should smoke one while watching the 3D version of Part 3....red and blue glasses in full effect. The big question is, with this cigar being so highly anticipated from the announcement at the IPCPR last summer, is it worth the hype? I would say yes to that. They could stand some age as I mentioned, but even now they are another terrific cigar from one of the best cigar companies out there. The JV13 is, even a little raw as it is now, better than 90% of the cigars out there. High praise indeed. Highly recommended.
