CAO Amazon Basin

Posted by Jack | in CAO | on 07 Sep 2014 | at 5:22 AM | 304 views

Of all of the cigars showcased at the IPCPR this year, the subject of this review surprised me the most.   When I first read about the Amazon Basin I thought gimmick from the start.   This ultra rare tobacco from the middle of the Amazon rain forest called Braganca is only grown every three years.   It is rolled into tubes and fermented for six months and then rowed by canoe to the civilized world.   After smoking a few of these, I am convinced it is not a gimmick.   Let's get smoking and you'll see what I mean.... Construction:  The wrapper on this cigar is a deep brown with streaks of black and loads of oils.   No seams or veins to... Continue reading »»

Kyle Hoover at Ezra Zion asked me to toss this press release out here for your general excitement and enjoyment.  I'll just leave this here.... 8/28/14 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Steve Parker, owner of Lone Star State Cigar Co. located in Allen and Plano, Texas, announces the release of the SP3. The SP3 is blended by Ezra Zion Cigar Company exclusively for Lone Star and will only be available through their retail locations. La Aroma de Cuba Noblesse

Posted by Jack | in La Aroma de Cuba | on 27 Aug 2014 | at 7:09 AM | 218 views

I recall smoking my first La Aroma de Cuba back in the day and stating that if Cuba smells like these cigars, sign me up.  Since then, I have moved to and away from the brand...it is just one that I tend to forget about...sad I know.  Well, this summer brings the birth of a new addition to the La Aroma lineup.  The Noblesse (French for nobility).  Last spring, I ended up with a three pack containing the Pepin-blended Mi Amor, Edicion Especiale, and Mi Amor Reserva...which I managed to plow through in twenty-four hours...reminding me why I should feel ashamed about forgetting about this stellar brand.  The Noblesse is a blend that was originally only available to Ashton Cigar Bar in Philly and is... IPCPR Report

Posted by Jack | in IPCPR 2014 | on 15 Aug 2014 | at 6:32 AM | 163 views

When you are handed a large pile of free premium cigars to smoke, you don't ask many questions...you just grin and say thanks while inwardly cackling like a jackal.  That is, unless they are from the IPCPR.  Samples from the much talked about show are a literal mixed bag...you never know what you are getting into. I took the large quantity of samples I was handed and split them into two piles.  The first pile consisting of cigars I know by reputation and the second pile being those of unknown quality or quantity. I will admit that the second pile gave me what I have been referring to as the cigar-blahs.  Smoking bland or boring blends many times in a row when  you are used... Continue reading »»

RoMa Craft Neanderthal

Posted by Jack | in RoMa Craft Tobac | on 14 Aug 2014 | at 11:16 AM | 214 views

I will admit that I was going to save my sample of the RoMa Craft Neanderthal until last out of the pile of samples I was handed from the IPCPR.  Honestly there have only been three good ones in the batch so far and so many bad ones that I felt that I better go with a sure thing today.  Smoking many boring and just downright bad cigars in a row can make a guy start to loose faith.  So, let's see if my sure thing is what I need to erase the cigar-blahs. Construction: A flat cap and tapered foot....man, Skip makes some cool shapes.  No band (yet) so nothing to say about that.  The wrapper leaf is shiny and smooth with well manicured... Joya de Nicaragua Red Toro

Posted by Jack | in Joya De Nicaragua | on 31 Jul 2014 | at 2:34 PM | 73 views

Last week, Joya de Nicaragua surprised me with a sampler of their newest creation.  The Red was one of the few cigars I had seen ads for prior to the IPCPR.  Lauded as a value offering, the Red absolutely blew me away.  I waited for too long to review it in all honesty so I am just going too get right to it.... Construction: A golden brown wrapper leaf with few veins and no visible seams covers this beautiful cigar. Pre-light Aroma and Draw: Out of the cellophane, the Red gives off aromas of sweet tobacco, dry hay, and nuts.  The draw is perfect and a cold pull gives a nice sweet tobacco flavor.  Light and Burn: Lighting is a snap.  Burn is sharp from... Bodega Reunion Digestivo Robusto Extra

Posted by Jack | in Bodega Cigars, Emilio Cigars | on 11 Jul 2014 | at 4:38 PM | 272 views

There is only one cigar under the Emilio umbrella that, until this review, I had to try.  The Bodega brand is a pretty small label under Gary's distribution...only two cigars in their catalog so far.  On the menu for today is the Digestivo.  Made to smoke after dinner with a brandy or cognac, this cigar is said to be very sweet.  I am intrigued.  Here goes.... Construction: A hefty leathery Mexican San Andres wrapper covers this chunky cigar.  The seams are nice and the veins are very well managed. Pre-light Aroma and Draw: Some leather and cocoa notes appear once the cellophane is gone.  I picked up some very sweet raisin and cocoa from the foot as well. Light and Burn: The Digestivo burns perfectly... Continue reading »»

Intemperance BA XXI Breach of the Peace by RoMa Craft Tobac

Posted by Jack | in RoMa Craft Tobac | on 10 Jul 2014 | at 7:27 PM | 266 views

Five days of worry and then some are over!  My Fiancee had a rough ordeal this past week involving her heart.  She is home now with a clean bill of health.  To celebrate, we are sitting on the porch enjoying this exceptionally mild summer weather.  So, I dug into my cigars and decided to review the last RoMa Craft cigar in my collection.  The Intemperance BA XXI Breach of the Peace.  Another cigar in the line that pays homage to the early days.  I won't bore you with loads of words....Let's smoke! Construction: A beautiful dark and oily wrapper leaf covers this chunky cigar.  No seams and very minor veins finished with a flawless triple cap.  The wrapper leaves about a quarter of an inch...
