Black Label Trading Co. Deliverance lancero

Posted by Jack | in Black Label Trading Company | on 11 Dec 2014 | at 1:18 PM | 70 views

I am SO behind on reviews!  James Brown of Black Label Trading Company hit me up about something the other day on Facebook and it reminded me that I owed him a couple of reviews.  So, today I selected his newest offering - The Deliverance.  This review only contains one mention of the 1972 film starring Burt Reynolds, Jon Voight, Ned Beatty, and Ronny Cox, and as it only appears in this introduction, you're past it now.  So, let's get smoking.... Construction: Deliverance is a very nice  looking cigar.  Long and slender with a nice lumpy shape under and veinless and mildly toothy wrapper - very rustic.  The band is a work of art.  All in all, James has some terrific cigars under his belt... Espinosa Laranja Reserva Toro

Posted by Jack | in Espinosa Cigars | on 20 Nov 2014 | at 10:45 AM | 128 views

I am privileged to try my first...yes, first ever...Espinosa cigar today.  I was handed the Laranja (Portuguese for Orange) Reserva for homework and my excitement level is off the charts.  Espinosa's cigars are very highly regarded in the community and I can't wait to see why.  Let's just get to it.... Construction: First of all, what a gorgeous presentation.  Gold, white, and orange in a very elegant band atop a golden orange wrapper leaf.  The cigar itself is fairly lumpy with a few veins here and there - overall a very nostalgic looking cigar. Pre-light Aroma and Draw: Not being packaged in cellophane, the Laranja isn't an aroma bomb under the nose. I get some raisin, milk chocolate, and dray hay.  The draw is absolutely... La Palina Black Label Petite Lancero

Posted by Jack | in La Palina | on 12 Nov 2014 | at 9:37 AM | 108 views

I won't beat around the bush with a lengthy intro.  Today I smoked the La Palina Black Label and it blew me away. La Palina offers some incredible cigars...and this newest addition is one of their best ever.  Let's get to it! Construction: The Black Label has a very rustic look.  The wrapper is veiny with black streaks over a rather lumpy shape.  Coupled with the absolutely gorgeous branding we have a very nice looking cigar here. Pre-light Aroma and Draw: Out of the cellophane the Black Label is massively aromatic.  Spices, leather, some rich earthy cinnamon-like notes...just awesome.  Even the head of the cigar has a sweet flavor that made me do a double take.  The draw is nice and comfortable.  Not too open... Tatuaje Monster Series No.7 Jekyll

Posted by Jack | in Tatuaje | on 23 Oct 2014 | at 9:26 AM | 195 views

I have no soul. I'm beyond the pale. I'm one of the living dead! Fredric March, Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, 1931 Inside each human is the propensity for good and evil...the premise for Robert Louis Stevenson's The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, written in 1886.  How does this fit into the world of cigars?  Let us say that Pete Johnson has a flair for the dramatic.  The Jekyll's release this year and the Hyde following it in 2015, he has given himself a canvas with which to display the good and evil lurking inside the cigars we smoke.  Okay, that might be my flair for the dramatic here, but there is no denying that Pete has something exciting here. While his... Continue reading »»

Foundry 1964 Blend Expect

Posted by Jack | in Foundry | on 10 Oct 2014 | at 12:01 PM | 197 views

The year was 1964 - The Cleveland Browns were Superbowl champs, the Sharpie Marker was new, The Beatles were the biggest thing anywhere, and Goldfinger was in theaters.  The makers of Foundry cigars are offering up a taste of the past in their usual enigmatic way with their Past, Present, Future line.   And today, I am fortunate enough to be smoking their piece of the past.   I have admitted it before but I am a nut for anything vintage.   TV shows, music, movies, clothes, you name it.   So, needless to say, I am excited to see what the Past tastes like according to Foundry. Construction:  Kind of lumpy and mildly veiny with a nice soft toothiness to the milk chocolate colored... Continue reading »»

Recluse Draconian Toro by Iconic Leaf

Posted by Jack | in Iconic Leaf | on 23 Sep 2014 | at 8:47 AM | 219 views

Well, I am down to my last two IPCPR cigars....the Emilio Carpe Noctem and the Recluse Draconian.  I have read many reviews about Iconic Leaf's cigars and have never seen one that is less than raving.  Needless to say, it was a calculated move for me to save this cigar to the end.  Let's get to it.... Construction:  A red brown and toothy wrapper with visible but smooth seams and no veins covers this box pressed beauty. Pre-light Aroma and Draw:  Out of the cellophane there are notes of leather, raisin, and some cinnamon.   I get some mineral and orange peel in there too. The draw is perfect. Light and Burn:  Spot on from start to finish.   I think I hit it once... Continue reading »»

CAO Amazon Basin

Posted by Jack | in CAO | on 07 Sep 2014 | at 5:22 AM | 525 views

Of all of the cigars showcased at the IPCPR this year, the subject of this review surprised me the most.   When I first read about the Amazon Basin I thought gimmick from the start.   This ultra rare tobacco from the middle of the Amazon rain forest called Braganca is only grown every three years.   It is rolled into tubes and fermented for six months and then rowed by canoe to the civilized world.   After smoking a few of these, I am convinced it is not a gimmick.   Let's get smoking and you'll see what I mean.... Construction:  The wrapper on this cigar is a deep brown with streaks of black and loads of oils.   No seams or veins to... Continue reading »»
