La Palina Red Label Robusto

Posted by Jack | in La Palina | on 20 Aug 2015 | at 11:50 AM | 7 views

As I used my charms - or lack there of - to get my mitts on the newest La Palina, I figured I better review it pretty quickly.  I have smoked my way through their cadre of cigars and loved every one of them.  So, how does this new Red Label stack up?  Let's see..... Construction: The Red Label has a nice rustic look to it - a tad rough around the cap but not poorly done or anything.  The wrapper is seamless, nearly veinless, and rough with tooth.  The new red band is extremely sharp as well.  Overall a nice looking presentation. Pre-light Aroma and Draw: Out of the cellophane the Red Label gives off a nice and very strong scent of sweet cinnamon. ... Continue reading »»

La Gloria Cubana Serie RF Toro (Famous Smoke Exclusive)

Posted by Jack | in La Gloria Cubana | on 06 Aug 2015 | at 6:09 AM | 129 views

I know I have said it before, but I will say it again....La Gloria is my favorite of the big-name-brands.  So, getting to review a shop exclusive LGC is pretty exciting.  This new Serie RF has been lauded as a perfect combo of La Gloria's finest tobaccos.  Bold words indeed.  Let's see how it plays out.  Here we go.... Construction: Like most of La Gloria's cigars, the RF is a tad lumpy and rustic looking.  The wrapper is deep brown with smooth seams and no veins.  The band is a dual affair that uses the standard and classic La Gloria band over the top of a rather simple striped deal.  I thought it was one band until I started trying to take it off the... Tatuaje Exclusive Series (Barclay Rex 2014)

Posted by Jack | in Tatuaje | on 16 Jul 2015 | at 2:45 PM | 64 views

I won't go on too much here with flowery words. I love Tatuaje cigars - if you haven't already noticed - so this review was a no-brainer.  An exclusive Tatuaje? I mean, come on....This is the second incarnation of Pete's exclusive Barclay Rex which he created for the 100th anniversary of the New York store of that same name.  Having never smoked one of these exclusives before, I can honestly say I am excited.  Let's go! Construction: The Barclay is a hefty cigar.  The wrapper is oily and sparkly like all of Pete's Broadleaf creations.  A few veins and some lumps make for a nice rustic look topped off with a nice retro styled band.  Pre-light Aroma and Draw: Out of the cellophane - which... Nat Sherman Epoca Prince

Posted by Jack | in Nat Sherman | on 25 Jun 2015 | at 10:45 AM | 97 views

The year was 1929. My Grandpa was 8 years old, the stock market crashed, Popeye made his first appearance, 7-up and the car radio were invented, and Nat Sherman released their first cigar...The Epoca.  Michael Herklots resurrected the line last year to celebrate the 85th anniversary of the company - complete with original packaging, box art, and vintage band.  Now, it is no secret that I am nuts for anything and everything vintage.  My radio station in the car is set to the big band era 90% of the time and most of the movies I watch are from the golden age of Hollywood.  That being said, I was super excited when I first read about this cigar and the nice guys at Famous Smoke... L'Atelier Cote d'Or

Posted by Jack | in L'Atelier | on 14 May 2015 | at 10:16 AM | 294 views

The announcement of a Pete Johnson creation containing Pelo de Oro last year at the IPCPR was akin to seeing a new blockbuster movie teaser.  The hype was heavy and it did create an air of excitement.  Pelo de Oro is a very sought after and incredibly difficult leaf to grow.  susceptible to mold and diseases, most farms avoid growing it if they can cultivate it at all.  In fact, the Sancti Spiritus leaf that Pete uses on the core L'Atelier line is a hybrid of Pelo de Oro and Criollo which is much more hardy.  Pelo de Oro itself is regarded for strength and sweetness - but again, being hard to grow it isn't seen often.  This cigar landed at the Wharf here in... A. Fuente Don Carlos Robusto

Posted by Jack | in Arturo Fuente | on 30 Apr 2015 | at 10:33 AM | 192 views

Famous Smoke Shop sent material for the easiest review I have ever had the pleasure of doing.  I mean, a Fuente?  They are Cigar Royalty, folks.  And the Don Carlos line is easily the Duke of their lineage.  I will get right to it.... Construction: The Don Carlos line is not the prettiest cigar around.  They are usually a bit lumpy and have the occasional vein here and there.  I  have had some issues with the wrapper splitting too - but in defense of this terrific smoke, the wrapper leaf is very delicate on this cigar, and a few issues here and there do not detract from the flavor at all. Pre-light Aroma and Draw: The Don Carlos has a nice earthy and sweet tobacco... Continue reading »»

Headlines 1st Edition Page 3 by Fusion and Sosa Cigars

Posted by Jack | in Antillian Cigars, Fusion Cigars | on 17 Apr 2015 | at 1:24 PM | 165 views

Back in the early 2000s, I went through a phase where I smoked Sosa cigars and almost nothing else.  I found them to be perfectly constructed and rich in flavor.  Over the years, as often happens, tastes change and products vanish.  Sadly, Sosa cigars because very scarce in the Dayton area, so I switched to....I believe it was Camacho.  Anyway, this past winter I received an e-mail from no less than Arby Sosa asking me to review their new venture with Fusion Cigars.  Well, I was pretty darned excited about that, as you can imagine.  This review has been in the hopper for far too long - and to be honest that is a good thing.  More on that later.  For now, let's get smoking....... Espinosa Alibi Backroom Series 2015

Posted by Jack | in Espinosa Cigars | on 09 Apr 2015 | at 10:11 AM | 264 views

Today I am going to try to get back on the review train.  I have a huge backlog of stuff to review but the subject of my magnifying glass today is the Espinosa Lounge Exclusive, Alibi (Backroom Series 2015).  Every single Espinosa cigar I have tried has been terrific.  Erik does a wonderful job coming up with new and unique blends - something I really enjoy.  The Alibi is not an easy cigar to come by.  If you have a lounge in your area, you can get them readily.  If not, you have to hunt online - which won't be easy.  So, I am pumped to smoke this thing so I will get going.... Construction: A gorgeous toothy wrapper covers this cigar.  The coloring is... Continue reading »»
