Eastern Standard Euro Express by Caldwell Cigars

" I'm going to find it and I'm going to destroy it. I don't know how yet. Possibly with dynamite."   Yes, I am starting this review with a quote from The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou.  Why?  I'm glad you asked.  Have you ever watched a movie by Wes Anderson, Tim Burton, Terry Gilliam, and just thought how quirky and fun they are?  Well, I categorize Caldwell Cigars as the Wes Anderson of the cigar industry.  Their cigars are incredible and the names and designs are quirky and fun.  So, that is where I am coming from here.  Spinning off from Wynwood, Caldwell has really taken the boutique side of the industry by storm with a nice air of magnificence and mystery.  So, enough... Oliva Connecticut Reserve Robusto

Posted by Jack | in Oliva Cigars | on 22 Jan 2015 | at 10:38 AM | 32 views

I am happy to announce that the guys at Famous Smoke Shop have asked me to review for them.  This is my first review for them and am pretty excited to get things rolling.  Granted, I am so far behind on reviews it is crazy - so their partnership has given me a bit of a goose to get back on the horse. The cigar up for review is one of the tried and true brands - Oliva.  A family that provides tobacco to tons of other brands out there, Oliva is constantly one of the best selling brands around based on price, availability, and quality.  Their earning of the number one cigar of the year on Cigar Aficionado's top 25 of 2014 can't hurt... Foundry Rare Air ET-P2

Posted by Jack | in Foundry | on 30 Dec 2014 | at 12:34 PM | 52 views

I have reviewed a few Foundry cigars over the past couple of years and they continue to surprise me.  Every cigar from their rather hush-hush catalog has been unique and enjoyable.  This year saw a slew of new releases from General Cigar's boutique arm, and the subject of this review is one of their best.  I am too anxious to talk, so let's get smoking.... Construction: So dark an oily you can see yourself in the wrapper leaf, slightly lumpy, with a few veins, the ET-P2 is actually a pretty cigar with a rustic feel.  Since the tobacco was grown from 1960 seed, that makes some sense. Pre-light Aroma and Draw: Out of the cellophane, I get a very powerful musty leather, malt, and minty... Continue reading »»

Carnavale Toro by Epicurean Cigars

Posted by Jack | in Epicurean Cigars | on 27 Dec 2014 | at 9:46 AM | 89 views

Before I go any further, I need to tell you that this review is a tad self-serving.   Steven Ysidron is a friend of mine.   I developed his website and when things are settled down, he and I chat often.   Steven was working on a band idea for his Carnavale release last winter and I asked him if I could help.   The result is now wrapped around every Carnavale cigar.   I have bands ready for his next three releases too.   Steven is just a terrific guy, so if you are lucky enough to meet him at your local shop, shake his hand, smoke and enjoy his cigars, and wish him a great 2015. Construction: The Carnavale is covered with a... Continue reading »»

Asylum Dragon's Milk

Posted by Jack | in Asylum 13 | on 20 Dec 2014 | at 7:22 AM | 63 views

So, I am sure you probably know about this cigar already if you like cigars and you like beer.  The Asylum Dragon's Milk is aged in New Holland Brewing Co's bourbon barrel stout barrels.  After the cigars are rolled they are aged for two days in the barrels.  So, after some delays and trials the Dragon's Milk is here.  Let's get smoking.... Construction:  The Dragon's Milk is a hefty Churchill size.   Lots of sheen to the wrapper leaf and a small vein or two, the DM is heavy in hand too. Pre-light Aroma and Draw:  I admit, I was expecting a beer note to the unlit cigar....instead,I get a sugary sweet tobacco with a very slight spice.   The draw is nice and open... Black Label Trading Co. Deliverance lancero

Posted by Jack | in Black Label Trading Company | on 11 Dec 2014 | at 1:18 PM | 115 views

I am SO behind on reviews!  James Brown of Black Label Trading Company hit me up about something the other day on Facebook and it reminded me that I owed him a couple of reviews.  So, today I selected his newest offering - The Deliverance.  This review only contains one mention of the 1972 film starring Burt Reynolds, Jon Voight, Ned Beatty, and Ronny Cox, and as it only appears in this introduction, you're past it now.  So, let's get smoking.... Construction: Deliverance is a very nice  looking cigar.  Long and slender with a nice lumpy shape under and veinless and mildly toothy wrapper - very rustic.  The band is a work of art.  All in all, James has some terrific cigars under his belt... Espinosa Laranja Reserva Toro

Posted by Jack | in Espinosa Cigars | on 20 Nov 2014 | at 10:45 AM | 223 views

I am privileged to try my first...yes, first ever...Espinosa cigar today.  I was handed the Laranja (Portuguese for Orange) Reserva for homework and my excitement level is off the charts.  Espinosa's cigars are very highly regarded in the community and I can't wait to see why.  Let's just get to it.... Construction: First of all, what a gorgeous presentation.  Gold, white, and orange in a very elegant band atop a golden orange wrapper leaf.  The cigar itself is fairly lumpy with a few veins here and there - overall a very nostalgic looking cigar. Pre-light Aroma and Draw: Not being packaged in cellophane, the Laranja isn't an aroma bomb under the nose. I get some raisin, milk chocolate, and dray hay.  The draw is absolutely... La Palina Black Label Petite Lancero

Posted by Jack | in La Palina | on 12 Nov 2014 | at 9:37 AM | 171 views

I won't beat around the bush with a lengthy intro.  Today I smoked the La Palina Black Label and it blew me away. La Palina offers some incredible cigars...and this newest addition is one of their best ever.  Let's get to it! Construction: The Black Label has a very rustic look.  The wrapper is veiny with black streaks over a rather lumpy shape.  Coupled with the absolutely gorgeous branding we have a very nice looking cigar here. Pre-light Aroma and Draw: Out of the cellophane the Black Label is massively aromatic.  Spices, leather, some rich earthy cinnamon-like notes...just awesome.  Even the head of the cigar has a sweet flavor that made me do a double take.  The draw is nice and comfortable.  Not too open...
